Welcome to my SBS page for WSS (SharePoint Services)
This is not an exhaustive resource on this product and this product is available
separately to SBS.
I will cover some of the SBS behaviors of the product as items come to light.
After a short life of barely a decade, the Windows Server shared folder is
disappearing. Why? Because the features that we've all been missing - version control, version history, extensibility, and workflow - are now achievable using Windows SharePoint Services document libraries.
You will move forward securely and effectively into a new era of "shared files". There are document libraries, Image libraries and many
web parts. We will all need to learn how to leverage additional functionality provided by Office 2003 and Office 2007 and at some stage look at alternatives for taking SharePoint files "offline" or "on the road."

Old Alerts
The MSNBC Web Parts that normally appear on SBS in the online gallery (online Web Part gallery for Windows SharePoint Services) have been discontinued.
On February 6, 2007, these Web Parts were discontinued, and they will no longer display data. Beginning on that day, the Web Parts will link to an article. At the end of February, the Web Parts will return an error.

Notes
(Q) Why am I not able to re-add users after deleting them from Manage Users?
(Q) Why does SharePoint show that I have more user accounts than are displayed in Manage Users?
(Q) How do I delete users in SharePoint?
(A) The problem is that using the Remove selected user(s) from all roles option found on the Manage Users screen does not delete the user accounts - it only removes the users from any roles. Essentially this disables the accounts without deleting them. In order to remove the accounts completely from your SharePoint site, use the Click here to add or delete accounts option found on the Site Administration page. From this screen you will be able to remove users entirely from your account.
(Q) I get "Can not add the user because a user with that name already exists." How do I add the user?
(A) Go to
Site Settings
Site Administration
Under Site Collection Administrator
View Site Collection user information and delete the user from there.
Now add the user back.
(Q) How do I change the SharePoint Site Region Settings ?
(A) Go to Site Administration - Top-level Site Administration - Change regional settings
(Q) How can I see the vacation calendar (Events lists) in Outlook or my own custom calendar ?
(A)In Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, you can view any contacts or events list
from a Windows SharePoint Services site as a read-only Outlook folder. Outlook
stores the data from the SharePoint list in a Personal Folders .pst file on the
user’s hard drive. Because the list information resides in a local file, these
event and contact items are available in Outlook even when the user is not
connected to the network. The user cannot, however, create new items in the
SharePoint lists through Outlook. The user still must browse to the SharePoint
site to create, delete, or modify items.
To link a contacts list or calendar to Outlook 2003
|
1. |
View the SharePoint list that you want to link to Outlook. |
|
2. |
Click the Link to Outlook link. (Netscape Navigator users will
see Link to Contacts or Link to Calendar.) |
|
3. |
Click Yes at the Do you want to add the folder to
Outlook? prompt. |
You can now see the linked folder in the Other Contacts or Other Calendars
list in the Outlook navigation pane, as well as in the Folder List.
As with any other Outlook contacts folder, the
user can enable the local copy of a contacts list for display in the Outlook
Address Book and use those contacts to resolve names in e-mail messages.
To remove a linked SharePoint list from Outlook
| • |
Right-click the name of the folder in the navigation pane, and select
Delete foldername. |
Removing a linked SharePoint list from Outlook does not delete the list from
the SharePoint site.
By default, Outlook checks each linked SharePoint list for updates whenever
the user switches to that folder in Outlook and every 20 minutes thereafter, and
it copies new or updated items to the local .pst file. Users can perform a
manual update of a linked SharePoint list at any time while they are displaying
the folder.
To update the Outlook copy of a linked SharePoint list
| • |
Right-click the Outlook folder, and then click
Refresh. |
Outlook monitors the progress of the update in the Outlook Send/Receive
Progress dialog and maintains information in the status bar on the number of items in the linked folder, the time of the last update,
and the next scheduled update. (Note that if the user is displaying multiple
calendar folders side by side, this information does not appear in the status
bar.)
